Crystal Of The Month - Obsidian

It’s hard to believe, but here we are in August, and with a new crystal to tell you about!

Most people – if not everyone – knows of obsidian, but a lot of people probably don’t know about the many ways in which it’s totally rockin’! Pun intended.

Obsidian is called a few things, ‘Nature’s Glass’ being one of them.

When this stone breaks, the fractured pieces are so sharp that they were used to make weapons, such as arrow heads, and other tools in the Stone Age. It’s even been used in medical practices because of how sharp it can be! It has a glossy luster and is often called volcanic glass for this reason, as well as for the fact that it’s formed mainly by rapidly cooling lava in volcanic regions. During the Paleolithic era, this stone was used as a fashionable way to adorn your loincloth but adding sparkle to the wardrobe wasn’t its only function. This stone was seen as a protector for the Paleo-Indian warriors while they hunted, and it also served to protect them against pillagers and trespassers.

Obsidian is also referred to as the ‘psychic vacuum cleaner’ because it helps to break down and clear away emotional roadblocks from past traumatic events.

Because you’re human, you may also have some dark traits you’ve been keeping at bay, such as anger, fear, any maybe even addiction. Obsidian can act as your guardian against those things by helping you realize these traits and then magnifying and projecting your true self, illuminating your way to your brighter, happier self.

The root chakra is responsible for our feelings of stability and security.

The energies of this chakra help us feel grounded and like we have a solid foundation for the rest of the chakras to build upon. Imbalance in the root chakra could result in anxiety and even nightmares. When you meditate with obsidian, it can help draw out any negative emotions that are threatening to crack your foundation and help you feel secure again. Simply gaze at the stone and ask for insight into why these negative thoughts and emotions are weighing you down. Allow the stones energy to cut through all the pessimism and self-doubt and make way for love and light to begin the healing process.
